About The Shoreline Journal
The Shoreline Journal started with a simple observation: the places where land meets water are some of the most contested, most loved, and most misunderstood places in Ontario. Everyone has an opinion about the waterfront. Very few publications take the time to cover it seriously.
We publish reporting and analysis on shoreline environment, waterfront recreation, waterfront living, land use and development, and the communities that sit along the water. Our coverage spans the Great Lakes, inland lakes, rivers, and canals across the province.
Our writers come from backgrounds in environmental science, outdoor recreation, real estate, and community journalism. They live in waterfront communities themselves and understand the tensions between preservation and development, access and privacy, tradition and growth.
We are not a tourism site. We are not a real estate listing service. We are a publication about the waterfront as a place where people live, work, play, and fight over the future.
What We Cover
Environment: Erosion, wetland loss, invasive species, water quality, habitat protection, and the science behind shoreline health.
Recreation: Paddling, fishing, boating, trails, beaches, birding, and public access to the waterfront.
Waterfront Living: Buying and selling near water, insurance, septic and well issues, dock permits, maintenance, and the realities of year-round waterfront life.
Development: Zoning, land use fights, environmental assessments, floodplain issues, and the planning decisions that shape waterfront communities.
